Suining — The Hometown of Guanyin
Located in the heart of the Sichuan Basin along the Fu River, Suining is a city with a long history of Buddhist culture and a particularly deep connection with Guanyin Bodhisattva.
A popular local legend says that the three sisters of Guanyin practiced separately: the eldest at Guangde Temple, the second at Lingquan Temple, and the youngest at Putuo Mountain in Nanhai. This folk tradition has been passed down for centuries and has made Suining known as the “Hometown of Guanyin in China.”
Lingquan Temple
Across the Fu River stands Lingquan Temple, built on Lingquan Mountain. Founded in 598 AD during the Sui Dynasty, it is regarded as one of China's earliest centers of popular Guanyin worship. The temple takes its name from the famous Lingquan Spring, whose clear and sweet water is said never to dry up. Surrounded by ancient trees and tranquil mountain scenery, it has long been one of Suining's most cherished Buddhist and cultural sites.
Guangde Temple
Guangde Temple, situated on Wolong Mountain west of the city, is one of the most important Buddhist temples in western China. Originally founded during the Tang Dynasty, its present architectural complex largely dates from the Ming Dynasty. Eleven emperors of the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties issued imperial endorsements to the temple, earning it the prestigious title “First Zen Monastery from the West.” Among its treasures are the Ming imperial edict archway, the Nine Dragon Stele, the Zishan Pagoda, a Myanmar jade Buddha, and two imperial jade seals.
On the 19th day of the second, sixth, and ninth lunar months, corresponding respectively to Guanyin's birthday, ordination, and enlightenment days, thousands of pilgrims gather at Lingquan Temple and Guangde Temple to burn incense and pray. The traditional Guanyin Incense Festival has become one of Suining's most distinctive expressions of folk Buddhist culture.
Beyond its Guanyin heritage, Suining is also an important part of Bashu civilization, having nurtured figures such as Chen Zi’ang, Wang Zhuo, Huang E, Zhang Penghe, and Zhang Wentao. With attractions including the China Dead Sea, Song Dynasty Porcelain Museum, and Longfeng Ancient Town, Suining offers a fascinating combination of Buddhist heritage, history, culture, and Sichuan life.
