Songpan
Songpan Ancient Town Ming Dynasty city wall in Aba Sichuan ChinaLocated in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, at an altitude of over 3,000 meters, Songpan Ancient Town is a historic city famous for its ancient walls, ethnic culture, and strategic importance along the ancient Tibetan-Han trade routes.
About 330 kilometers from Chengdu, Songpan sits along the Minjiang River, with the main part of the old town located on the western bank. As one of the best-preserved ancient towns in Sichuan, it has been recognized as a protected historical and cultural site by the province.
Surrounded by mountains and plateau landscapes, Songpan is also an important gateway to nearby attractions such as Huanglong Scenic Area and Jiuzhaigou Valley.

History of Songpan Ancient Town
The history of Songpan dates back more than a thousand years. The ancient city was first established during the Tang Dynasty (618–907) and was later rebuilt and expanded during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).
Because of its strategic location between Sichuan and the Tibetan regions, Songpan was once an important military stronghold. It was also a major center for economic exchange, especially for the famous tea-horse trade between Han Chinese agricultural areas and Tibetan pastoral regions.
The frequent interactions between Han and Tibetan communities throughout history helped create Songpan’s unique multicultural character.

Ancient City Walls and Gates
One of the greatest highlights of Songpan is its impressive Ming Dynasty city wall.
Located in Anjin Town, where the Songpan county government is based, the ancient wall was constructed with stone slabs and blue bricks. Construction began in 1378 and was completed in 1442.
The city wall originally stretched approximately 62 kilometers, consisting of inner and outer walls with seven gates. Several ancient gate structures remain today, including:
* Northern Gate Arch
    * Width: about 6 meters
    * Height: about 6.8 meters
    * Thickness: about 31.8 meters
Songpan Ancient Town Ming Dynasty city wall in Aba Sichuan China* Eastern Gate Arch
    * Width: about 6 meters
    * Height: about 6.3 meters
    * Thickness: about 22 meters
* Southern Gate Arch
    * Width: about 6 meters
    * Height: about 8.8 meters
    * Thickness: about 30 meters
The remarkable depth of Songpan’s city gates was considered exceptional among Ming Dynasty city defenses. Their construction represents the combined wisdom and craftsmanship of the Tibetan, Han, Hui, and Qiang peoples.

Multicultural Heritage of Songpan
Songpan Ancient Town is a living example of cultural exchange among different ethnic groups. Traditional houses, ancient streets, temples, and local customs reflect the diverse history of the region.
The old-style buildings stand in contrast with modern structures, creating a unique atmosphere where history and contemporary life exist together.
Local people have long regarded the ancient town as a place of great spiritual and cultural importance, preserving its traditions and historical identity.

Explore Songpan Ancient Town
Visitors can stroll along the ancient streets, admire the historic city walls, and enjoy boat trips along the Minjiang River for beautiful views of the old town surrounded by Mingshan Mountain.
With its ancient architecture, ethnic diversity, and role in the history of Sichuan and Tibet, Songpan Ancient Town offers travelers a fascinating journey into the cultural heart of western Sichuan.
