Luding Bridge
Located over the Dadu River in Luding County, Sichuan Province, Luding Bridge is one of the most famous historic bridges in China. Built during the Qing Dynasty, the bridge is renowned not only for its unique engineering design but also for its important role in modern Chinese history.
Constructed in 1705 during the 44th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign (Qing Dynasty, 1644–1911), Luding Bridge is an impressive iron chain suspension bridge that has survived for more than 300 years.
Architecture of Luding Bridge
Luding Bridge has a total length of approximately 100 meters and spans the fast-flowing Dadu River.
The bridge structure consists of:
* 13 iron chains
* 9 lower chains supporting the bridge deck
* 4 side chains serving as handrails
Each iron chain weighs about 2.5 tons. Wooden boards are placed across the supporting chains, forming a walkway for pedestrians.
The bridge is about 28 meters wide and stands approximately 14 meters above the river surface, demonstrating the advanced construction techniques of ancient China.
At one end of the bridge hangs a plaque bearing the name of the bridge written by Emperor Kangxi. On the eastern side of the bridge stands the Imperial Stele of Luding Bridge, also written by Emperor Kangxi.
Luding Bridge and the Long March
Luding Bridge is especially famous because of its connection with the Long March of the Chinese Red Army.
On May 29, 1935, during the Long March, the First Corps of the Red Army arrived at Luding Bridge. At that time, enemy forces occupied the opposite bank and blocked the army’s route across the Dadu River.
To capture the bridge, a special assault team of 22 soldiers was organized. Under heavy enemy fire, they advanced along the narrow iron chains of the bridge and successfully seized control of Luding Bridge, allowing the main Red Army forces to cross the river safely.
The event became one of the most widely remembered episodes of the Long March and gave Luding Bridge a significant place in Chinese revolutionary history.

Today, Luding Bridge is both an important historical monument and a popular cultural attraction in western Sichuan.
