Kangding
Kangding city and river valley scenery Sichuan ChinaKangding (Dartsendo in Tibetan) is a charming mountain town located in a dramatic river valley at the meeting point of the Zheduo River and Yala River, known in Tibetan as the Dar and Tse Rivers. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, deep valleys, and Tibetan landscapes, Kangding is one of the most important gateways to western Sichuan and the Tibetan regions of China.
Rising above the town is the magnificent Mount Gongga, also known as Minya Konka, which reaches an elevation of 7,556 meters and is the highest peak in Sichuan Province. For travelers exploring western Sichuan, Kangding is an ideal place to stay for several days to experience its unique scenery, ethnic culture, and highland atmosphere.

A Historic Borderland Between Han and Tibetan Cultures
Arriving in Kangding, visitors immediately sense the transition from the Han Chinese heartland to the Tibetan plateau. For centuries, Kangding has served as a cultural and commercial crossroads between these two worlds.
Historically, the town was a major trading hub where Tibetan communities exchanged yak hides, wool, medicinal herbs, and other local products for goods from inland China, especially tea bricks produced in Ya’an. These tea bricks were traditionally wrapped in yak hides and transported along the ancient Tea Horse Road, one of the most important trade routes connecting Sichuan and Tibet.
Kangding also played a significant role as a stopping point on the route to Lhasa. It was once the capital of the Tibetan Kingdom of Chakla and later became the capital of Xikang Province from 1939 to 1951.

Mountain and valley view in KangdingExperience Tibetan Culture in Kangding
Today, Kangding remains a lively meeting place of Tibetan and Chinese cultures. Visitors can still see Khamba Tibetans coming down from surrounding mountain areas to trade in local markets, where large blocks of yak butter and traditional goods are commonly sold.
The town’s streets also reflect its strong Tibetan identity, with monks in crimson robes walking between monasteries, traditional Tibetan architecture standing alongside modern buildings, and local markets filled with regional crafts and flavors.

Kangding Festivals and Traditional Handicrafts
The biggest annual celebration in Kangding takes place on the 8th day of the 4th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The festival features traditional activities on Racehorse Hill and a lively ten-day street fair that transforms the entire town into a center of music, dance, trade, and Tibetan cultural performances.
For travelers interested in traditional craftsmanship, the Kangding Nationalities Handicraft Workshop is a worthwhile stop. Located near the bus station, the workshop has a small exhibition area downstairs, while upstairs visitors can watch local artisans create traditional Tibetan jewelry, household items such as tea churns, and Buddhist ritual objects.

Things to Do in Kangding

Hiking and Mountain Experiences
While staying in Kangding, travelers can take an easy hike on Guoda Mountain, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and serves as a good introduction for visitors planning longer trekking adventures in western Sichuan.
The surrounding region is also famous for alpine landscapes, snow mountains, grasslands, and Tibetan villages, making Kangding a popular starting point for journeys toward destinations such as Tagong Grassland, Xinduqiao, and Mount Gongga.

Relax at Jiangshan Tea Garden
For a peaceful break in town, Jiangshan Tea Garden is a popular place to enjoy tea and meet local people. The teahouse is run by Mr. Ang Luo, who previously lived in the United Kingdom and can communicate in English, making it a welcoming stop for international visitors.
The tea garden is located near the Kangding Hotel area. From the hotel entrance, walk past the monastery on the left, turn left onto the main road alongside the river, and continue for about ten minutes. When you reach a large street entering from the left, the tea garden is located on the corner inside a building lobby.
