Bipenggou Valley
Nestled in Lixian County of the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Bipenggou Valley, also known as Bipenggou Scenic Area, is one of the most spectacular alpine destinations in western China. Located about 198 kilometers from Chengdu on the northern side of Mount Siguniang, the valley is famous for its snow-capped mountains, ancient glaciers, emerald lakes, colorful forests, and pristine alpine landscapes. Its breathtaking scenery has earned it the nickname “The Little Switzerland of Western Sichuan.”
Covering 613.8 square kilometers with elevations ranging from 2,015 to 5,922 meters, Bipenggou is part of the Miyaluo Nature Reserve and the Sichuan Giant Panda Habitat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Combining dramatic mountain scenery, rich biodiversity, and year-round outdoor activities, it has become one of the most popular attractions near Chengdu for hiking, sightseeing, photography, skiing, and nature holidays.

Best Time to Visit Bipenggou Valley
Bipenggou offers spectacular scenery throughout the year, with each season presenting a different landscape.
 
Spring (March–May)
As winter snow begins to melt, alpine meadows burst into bloom beneath snow-covered peaks. Wildflowers, crystal-clear streams, and fresh mountain air make spring an excellent season for hiking and photography.
 
Summer (June–August)
With average daytime temperatures around 15°C (59°F), Bipenggou is one of the best summer escapes in Sichuan. Dense virgin forests, alpine lakes, and cool mountain breezes provide a refreshing retreat from the summer heat.
 
Autumn (September–November)
Autumn is widely regarded as the best time to visit Bipenggou. The valley transforms into a spectacular tapestry of golden, crimson, and orange forests set against glaciers and snow-capped mountains. It is one of western China’s premier destinations for autumn foliage photography.
 
Winter (December–March)
Winter blankets the valley in snow, creating a magical alpine landscape. With a long snow season and excellent snow conditions, Bipenggou is a popular destination for skiing, snow play, and winter sightseeing.

Ancient Glaciers
Bipenggou is home to some of China’s finest ancient glaciers, featuring dramatic ice walls, glacial valleys, cirques, and sharp mountain ridges. These spectacular geological formations reveal the powerful forces that shaped the landscape over thousands of years.
 
Longwang Lake
Located at an elevation of approximately 2,950 meters, Longwang Lake is one of Sichuan’s Top 100 Scenic Attractions. Its crystal-clear emerald water reflects surrounding forests and snow-covered mountains, offering breathtaking scenery in every season.
 
Yanziyan Nest
Situated at 3,837 meters, Yanziyan Nest is one of the best viewpoints in Bipenggou. Surrounded by glaciers, alpine meadows, and towering peaks, it offers magnificent panoramic views and is often called the “Silhouette of Mount Siguniang.”
 
Red Leaf Valley
Stretching for approximately 11 kilometers, Red Leaf Valley is one of Bipenggou’s most famous attractions. Between October and November, forests of red birch, maple, sea buckthorn, and alpine conifers create one of the most spectacular autumn landscapes in Sichuan.

Fed by glaciers and mountain springs, Bipenggou features numerous waterfalls and lakes throughout the valley. Highlights include:
* White Dragon Waterfall
* Green Dragon Waterfall
* Flying Dragon Waterfall
* Flying Stream Waterfall
These cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear alpine lakes create some of the most picturesque scenery in western Sichuan.
 
Wenpin Valley Hot Springs
After a day of sightseeing, visitors can unwind at Wenpin Valley Hot Springs, where natural mineral-rich spring water reaches temperatures of around 70°C. Surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery, the hot springs provide a relaxing end to any visit.
 
Hiking and Outdoor Adventures
Bipenggou is one of western China’s premier destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. The valley offers excellent opportunities for hiking, trekking, mountain photography, snow sports, and glacier exploration.
The famous trekking route connecting Changping Valley in Mount Siguniang Scenic Area with Bipenggou is recognized as one of China’s Ten Classic Hiking Routes and is often referred to as the “Alps of China.” Experienced mountaineers are also drawn to nearby Banjifeng Glacier and Dahuang Peak, the second-highest mountain in Aba Prefecture.
 
Wildlife and Nature
As part of the Sichuan Giant Panda Habitat, Bipenggou is home to an exceptionally rich ecosystem. The scenic area supports 76 species of mammals and more than 210 species of birds, including several nationally protected animals such as:

* Forest Musk Deer
* Tibetan Macaque
* Black Bear
