Bifengxia Wildlife Park Yaan
Giant panda eating bamboo at Bifengxia Panda Base	Located in Bifengxia Town, Ya’an City, Sichuan Province, Bifengxia Panda Base is one of the most important giant panda conservation and research centers in China.
Situated approximately 150 kilometers from Chengdu, the base can be reached in about 1.5–2 hours by road, making it one of the best destinations for travelers who want to experience giant pandas in a natural mountain environment.
Combining giant panda breeding, scientific research, wildlife conservation, and eco-tourism, Bifengxia Panda Base plays an important role in protecting China’s national treasure and promoting panda conservation worldwide.

A New Home for Giant Pandas After the Wenchuan Earthquake
The devastating Wenchuan Earthquake on May 12, 2008 severely damaged the Wolong National Natural Reserve, one of China’s major panda habitats.
To protect the giant pandas affected by the disaster, an emergency relocation program was launched. Many captive pandas were transferred to safer locations, including Bifengxia Panda Base.
Thanks to its relatively stable environment and excellent natural conditions, Bifengxia became an important temporary and long-term home for pandas during the recovery of the Wolong reserve.
The successful relocation demonstrated the importance of modern conservation facilities in protecting endangered wildlife during natural disasters.

The Natural Beauty of Bifengxia Gorge
Before becoming famous for panda conservation, Bifengxia was already known for its spectacular natural scenery.
The gorge features:
* Deep valleys
* Lush forests
* Crystal-clear streams
* Beautiful waterfalls
* Diverse vegetation
The V-shaped canyon consists of two main sections, extending approximately 7 kilometers and 6 kilometers respectively.
With elevations ranging from about 700 to 1,970 meters, Bifengxia offers a cool mountain climate and rich biodiversity, creating an ideal environment for both wildlife and visitors.

Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center
The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda established Bifengxia as a major panda research facility in 2003 together with the State Forestry Administration.
The base is divided into several specialized areas:
* Giant panda breeding area
* Panda nursery and baby panda care zone
* Scientific research center
* Bamboo forest habitat
* Administrative facilities
The carefully designed environment allows pandas to grow in conditions similar to their natural habitat while supporting important breeding and research programs.

Unlike traditional zoos, Bifengxia Panda Base offers visitors the chance to observe giant pandas in a peaceful forest environment.
Visitors may see:
* Adult pandas eating bamboo
* Young pandas playing and climbing
* Panda mothers caring for cubs
* Researchers conducting conservation work
The base is especially popular because it provides opportunities to see panda cubs, which are rarely visible in the wild.

The Birth of Panda Cubs and Conservation Success
One of the most memorable moments in Bifengxia’s history came on July 6, 2008, when the panda mother Guo Guo successfully gave birth to twin cubs.
After surviving the earthquake and adapting to her new environment, Guo Guo’s successful birth brought new hope to the recovery efforts following the disaster.
The twin cubs became the first giant panda twins born worldwide in 2008, symbolizing the resilience of both the pandas and the conservation efforts protecting them.
By the end of 2008, 13 panda cubs had successfully survived at Bifengxia Panda Base.

Why Visit Bifengxia Panda Base?
Bifengxia Panda Base is one of the best places in China to learn about giant pandas and wildlife conservation.
Highlights include:
* Close encounters with giant pandas
* Panda breeding and research facilities
* Beautiful mountain landscapes
* Educational conservation experiences
* Easy access from Chengdu
For travelers visiting Sichuan, a trip to Bifengxia offers a meaningful opportunity to understand China’s efforts to protect one of the world’s most beloved endangered animals.
