Gartok Monastery in Baiyu
Gartok Monastery in Baiyu county is the larest also most myesterious red school monastery hiding in the deep mountain of East Tibetan plateau.

Gartok Monastery, or Gato monastery, is located on the slopes of Doni Mountain in Bailong Valley, Hepo District, Baiyu County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, approximately 51 kilometers north of Baiyu County town.

Gartok Monastery is one of the six major temples of the Nyingma School (Red Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism in China. The monastery houses grand halls and a gilded bronze pagoda adorned with precious ornaments bestowed by the imperial court, known as "Kadang."  Sub branches of Gartok Monasteries are distributed across provinces of Tibet, Qinghai, Yunnan, as well as countries of Mongolia, India, and Bhutan, totaling over 140 in number. The Great Golden Hall stands as the foremost structure in the monastery, covering an area of approximately 600 square meters. With its soaring eaves and majestic architecture, the hall features columns, corridors, eaves, and pavilions all adorned with Tibetan-style painted decorations and wood carvings.

The cultural relics preserved in the monastery include arrowheads, bows, single-eared bronze jars, animal-shaped pots, helmets, and swords from the King Gesar period. Yuan Dynasty imperial gifts include fragments of Padmasambhava's embroidered statue, four seals bestowed by Phagspa to the monastery, two Manjushri Buddha statues from the Ming Dynasty, and porcelain bowls and ten copies of the scripture "Gepen Quanji" donated during the Qing Dynasty.

As a significant sacred site of Tibetan Buddhism, Gartuok Monastery in Baiyu not only preserves abundant historical and cultural information but also reflects the religious beliefs and artistic creativity of the Tibetan people. It holds great significance for studying the history of Tibetan Buddhism and King Gesar culture.

In 1159 AD, the eminent Nyingma master Gyal Dampa Delek established the White Jade Gartok Monastery. Around 1360 AD, when Master Weng Xiuba Wa presided over the monastery, the Mu clan chieftain of Yunnan (commonly known as King of Mu) donated Buddhist artifacts and expanded the main hall of the White Jade Kato Monastery. In 1435 AD, when Po Puwa took charge of the monastery, nearly ten thousand pilgrims from Yunnan, Aba, Batang, and Kangding came to worship at the White Jade Kato Monastery. At this time, the monastery featured a grand three-tiered architecture with upper, middle, and lower levels, and many new Buddhist artifacts were created. Between 1686 and 1746 AD, Zhi Mei Xingxiong announced that Baqie Jiduoji was summoned to Beijing by Chinese Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, who personally bestowed upon him a crown, a four-window sedan chair, and a complete set of ceremonial guards and palace instruments. During the Padmasambhava Festival, the Gartok Monastery in Baiyu organized monks to perform Han-style dances, established the Three Masters Pagoda Courtyard, renovated the temples, and founded a printing academy.

In 1760 AD, when Geze Niumaize Wengquzhu presided over the monastery, he won debates among various schools in Lhasa and was honored with the title "Banzhi Da" (Doctor). His disciple Zhangjia was revered as a national master by Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty. He meticulously annotated the original scriptures, Vinaya, treatises, and Tibetan Buddhist commentaries of the White Jade Kato Monastery, printed them, and provided commentary. The Third Khatuo Monastery Living Buddha served as the Dalai Lama's teacher. During his tenure, he established a printing academy, which amassed over 7,000 volumes, making it one of the most extensive and magnificent printing academies between Kham and Tibet. He also supervised Tibetan and Han craftsmen to design and construct the Auspicious Bronze Mountain Buddha Hall within the monastery. Thus, Khatuo Monastery became a temple with grand architectural complexes, abundant cultural relics, and unique style between Kham and Tibet.
