Liurongsi Six Banyan Temple
Liurong Temple in Guangdong provinceLocated on Liurong Street in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, Six Banyan Temple (Liurong Temple) is one of the most famous ancient Buddhist temples in Guangzhou.
Originally built during the Liu Song Period of the Southern Dynasties (420–479 AD), the temple has a history of more than 1,500 years. Throughout history, it has attracted many renowned scholars and cultural figures, including Wang Bo and Su Shi, leaving behind a rich legacy of literature, architecture, and Buddhist culture.
In 1100 AD, during the third year of the Song Yuanfu era, the famous poet and scholar Su Shi (Su Dongpo) visited the temple. Inspired by the beautiful banyan trees in the temple, he wrote the calligraphy inscription “Six Banyan”. Later generations carved the inscription onto a stone tablet, and the temple officially became known as Six Banyan Temple.

Architecture of Six Banyan Temple
Six Banyan Temple covers an area of approximately 13,500 square meters and is best known for its iconic Six Banyan Flower Pagoda (Liurong Flower Pagoda).
The pagoda is a magnificent brick structure with:
* An octagonal floor plan
* A south-facing orientation
* Nine visible exterior levels
* A total of 17 layers combining visible and hidden floors
Inside the pagoda niches are numerous Buddha statues, earning it another name — the “Thousand Buddha Pagoda.”
The elegant design, colorful appearance, and long history make the Flower Pagoda one of Guangzhou’s most recognizable ancient architectural landmarks.

Cultural Relics and Buddhist Heritage
Six Banyan Temple preserves many valuable cultural relics, including:
* A bronze statue of Master Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism
* The famous “Six Banyan” inscription plaque
* Ancient Buddhist artworks and historical objects
These treasures reflect the long development of Buddhism in southern China and demonstrate the temple’s important role in Guangzhou’s religious and cultural history.

Religious Activities at Six Banyan Temple
Six Banyan Temple continues to be an active Buddhist center in Guangzhou.
On important Buddhist occasions, including:
* The first and fifteenth days of each lunar month
* Buddha’s Birthday
* Buddha Bathing Festival
* Guanyin Bodhisattva’s Birthday
the temple holds traditional Buddhist ceremonies, including large-scale Dharma assemblies and blessing activities.
During the early years of the Republic of China period, banyan trees were replanted and the Banyan Pavilion was built in memory of Su Shi and his connection with the temple.

Historical and Cultural Significance
Six Banyan Temple is an important example of ancient Chinese Buddhist architecture and holds significant historical, artistic, and scientific value.
With its ancient pagoda, Buddhist traditions, cultural relics, and connection with famous historical figures, the temple represents an important part of Guangzhou’s cultural heritage.
It has been officially listed as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit of China.

Why Visit Six Banyan Temple?
Six Banyan Temple offers visitors a peaceful escape in the heart of Guangzhou and provides a unique opportunity to experience:
* Ancient Chinese Buddhist architecture
* The famous Thousand Buddha Pagoda
* Southern Chinese religious culture
* Historical connections with Su Shi and other scholars
* Traditional Buddhist ceremonies
For travelers interested in Guangzhou history, Chinese architecture, and Buddhist culture, Six Banyan Temple is one of the city’s most meaningful cultural attractions.
