D2: Mogao Grottoes / Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Lake / Leiyin Temple
This morning, visit the world-famous Mogao Grottoes, also known as the “Thousand-Buddha Caves.” With a history of more than 1,500 years, the grottoes are home to an extraordinary collection of Buddhist murals, sculptures, and other works of religious art. The Mogao Grottoes were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 and are considered one of the most important collections of Buddhist art in the world.
Together with the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, and the Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui, they are among China’s most famous Buddhist grotto complexes.
After exploring the Mogao Grottoes, continue to Mingsha Mountain, also known as the Singing Sands Mountain. Located in the desert outside Dunhuang, the area is famous for the unusual sound produced by the sand as it is moved by the wind or disturbed by footsteps. Depending on the conditions, the sound may resemble musical instruments or the distant rumble of thunder.
At the foot of the dunes, you will find the beautiful Crescent Lake, a crescent-shaped oasis surrounded by golden sand dunes. The contrast between the tranquil blue water and the vast desert creates one of Dunhuang’s most iconic landscapes.
Continue to Leiyin Temple, located near Mingsha Mountain. The present temple was built in 1991 and covers an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. According to local tradition, the original temple was buried beneath the sand during a sandstorm. Today, Leiyin Temple is an important Buddhist site in western China and offers a peaceful place to appreciate Dunhuang’s religious heritage.
In the late afternoon, your guide will accompany you back to your hotel.
