D1: Arrive in Dunhuang
Your Dunhuang tour begins with a pickup from Dunhuang Airport or Dunhuang Railway Station. Your local guide will meet you upon arrival and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to rest or explore Dunhuang at your own pace.
D2: Mogao Grottoes / Singing Sands Mountain / Crescent Lake / Leiyin Temple
In the morning, visit the world-famous Mogao Grottoes, also known as the “Thousand-Buddha Caves.” With a history of more than 1,500 years, the grottoes are renowned for their extraordinary collection of Buddhist sculptures, murals, and other works of religious art. The Mogao Grottoes were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 and are regarded as one of the most important collections of Buddhist art in the world.
Together with the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, and the Maijishan Grottoes in Tianshui, the Mogao Grottoes are among the most famous Buddhist grotto complexes in China.
After visiting the Mogao Grottoes, head to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake, one of the most spectacular desert landscapes around Dunhuang. Mingsha Mountain, also known as the Singing Sands Mountain, gets its name from the unusual sound produced by the sand when it is moved by the wind or disturbed by footsteps. The sound can resemble the notes of musical instruments or the rumble of thunder.
At the foot of the sand dunes lies the beautiful Crescent Lake, a crescent-shaped oasis surrounded by golden desert sands. The contrast between the tranquil blue water and vast dunes creates one of Dunhuang’s most memorable landscapes.
Continue to Leiyin Temple, located near Mingsha Mountain. The present temple was built in 1991 and covers an area of about 3,000 square meters. According to local tradition, the original temple was buried beneath the sand during a severe sandstorm. Today, Leiyin Temple is an important Buddhist site in western China and provides a peaceful setting to appreciate the region’s religious heritage.
In the late afternoon, your guide will accompany you back to your hotel.
D3: Depart Dunhuang
After breakfast, your guide will transfer you to Dunhuang Airport or Dunhuang Railway Station for your onward journey. Your Dunhuang tour ends here.
