The Earth Forest
Located in Yuanmou County, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, the Yuanmou Earth Forest is a spectacular geological attraction known for its unique earth pillars and dramatic landscape. Often described as a “natural miracle of Yunnan,” this extraordinary site offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore one of China’s most fascinating landforms.
Covering an area of more than 50 square kilometers, Yuanmou Earth Forest consists mainly of three scenic areas: Banguo, Xinhua, and Hutiaotan. The landscape features countless tall earth pillars, cliffs, and formations in various shapes and sizes. Some of the highest pillars reach nearly 40 meters, standing as high as a 10-story building.
The formation of the Earth Forest is the result of millions of years of geological evolution. Over the past 1.5 million years, natural forces such as wind, rain erosion, and tectonic activity gradually shaped the landscape. As softer surface materials were washed away, harder layers containing calcium and iron remained, forming the towering earth pillars that can be seen today.
Similar to the famous Stone Forest in Kunming, the unique formations of Yuanmou Earth Forest have inspired many imaginative names among local people. Visitors can find formations resembling swords, pagodas, ancient grottoes, beautiful women, labyrinths, and writing brushes, each displaying the creativity of nature.
With its unusual shapes, colorful layers, and impressive scale, Yuanmou Earth Forest is a must-visit destination for travelers interested in geology, photography, and natural landscapes.
