Yueyang Tower
Located on the shore of Dongting Lake in Yueyang City, Hunan Province, Yueyang Tower (岳阳楼) is one of the Three Famous Towers in China, together with Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan and Tengwang Pavilion in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.
With its elegant wooden structure, yellow glazed roof tiles, and striking red exterior, Yueyang Tower is considered one of the finest examples of ancient Chinese architecture. According to historical records, Lu Su, a famous military commander of the Eastern Wu Kingdom, built a tower near the strategic junction where Dongting Lake meets the Yangtze River. The tower was originally used as a military observation point to monitor the surrounding waters and train naval forces.
During the Tang Dynasty (618–907), the building became known as Yueyang Tower. Over centuries, it was damaged and rebuilt several times due to wars and natural disasters. The tower was reconstructed during the Song Dynasty (960–1279) and gradually developed into an important cultural landmark where poets and scholars gathered for inspiration.
Architectural Features of Yueyang Tower
Yueyang Tower is regarded as a masterpiece of traditional Chinese architecture.
The current structure features:

In the masterpiece, Fan Zhongyan described the magnificent scenery of Dongting Lake and expressed his famous philosophy of putting the country and people before personal interests:
“Be the first to worry about the troubles of the world, and the last to enjoy its happiness.”
Today, a precious wooden screen engraved with the complete text of “Memorial to Yueyang Tower” from the Qing Dynasty is preserved inside the tower and has become one of the most important highlights for visitors.
