Qiandaohu Lake National Forest Park
Qiandao Lake, also known as Thousand Island Lake, is one of the most beautiful freshwater lake destinations in China. Located in Chun’an County, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, the lake is approximately 100 kilometers from Hangzhou and Huangshan Mountain, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and travelers exploring eastern China.
Originally known as the Xin’an River Reservoir, Qiandao Lake was created after the construction of the Xin’an River Hydropower Station. Today, it is famous for its clear blue water, lush mountains, and more than 1,000 scenic islands, earning it the name “Thousand Island Lake.”

Formation and History of Qiandao Lake
The construction of the Xin’anjiang Reservoir began in 1955. In 1959, the Xin’an River Hydropower Station started water storage, and the reservoir was officially completed in 1960.
After the reservoir was formed, the surrounding mountain areas were submerged, leaving the peaks above the water surface as thousands of islands. A total of 1,078 islands emerged from the lake, creating the unique landscape that gave Qiandao Lake its name.
On December 15, 1984, the reservoir was officially renamed Qiandao Lake (Thousand Island Lake).
Qiandao Lake is recognized as one of the three largest Thousand Island Lakes in the world, together with similar island-dotted lakes in other countries.
