South Shaolin Si Temple, or Nan Shaolin Temple, is located in Jiulian Mountain
in Putian City, Fujian Province. Founded in the early Southern Dynasties 1000 years ago, South Shaolin Si Temple is the birthplace of southern Shaolin Kungfu culture. It is not only one of the representative temples of Chinese Zen Buddhism, but also one of the birthplaces of southern fist martial arts in China.

Originally named Linquan Temple, the Southern Shaolin Si Temple was established in 557 AD during the Yongding era of the Chen Dynasty (Southern Dynasties). The temple's Kungfu arts tradition originated in the early Tang Dynasty when the coastal regions in Fujian province suffered from rampant banditry and social unrest. After Emperor Tang Taizong / Li Shimin ascended the throne, he ordered Abbot Tan Zong of Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng of Henan province, who was also a grand general, to lead army of monks in suppressing piracy. Tan Zong dispatched three monks—Dao Guang, along with Sang Guang and Sang Man—as members of the Thirteen Kungfu Monks to Fujian Province with five hundred monk soldiers. They gained numerous Zen disciples among local communities, who warmly welcomed these "lifesaving sages" from the coast. Moved by their hospitality, Dao Guang returned to Shaolin Si temple in Songshan Mountain to report to Abbot Tan Zong. The abbot then composed a verse, instructing him to establish the Southern Shaolin Si Temple at a location resembling Songshan's Nine Lotus Peaks: "First, to remember our ancestral roots; Second, to spread Mahayana Zen across the coast." Following this guidance, Dao Guang and his fellow monks relocated to Linquan Temple—a renowned site resembling Songshan—where they organized monastic troops and managed affairs, transforming it into a branch temple of Shaolin Si temple in southern China. Nestled within a ring of nine mountains surrounding Linshan Village, the temple sits at the heart of the lotus-shaped area, earning its name "Nine Lotus Mountain Shaolin Temple" and popularly known as Southern Shaolin Temple.
South Shaolin Temple is the birthplace of southern boxing. At that time, the Kungfu of Southern Shaolin Si Temple were practiced in this temple and spread widely among the people.
