Your private guide and driver will meet you in Taiyuan in the morning and begin your journey to Pingyao with a visit to Jinci Temple, one of Shanxi’s most important historic and cultural sites.
Jinci Temple is a historic temple complex dedicated to Prince Ji, a legendary figure associated with the founding of the Jin state, and his mother, Yi Jiang. The complex has a history of more than 1,000 years and features a remarkable collection of ancient buildings, gardens, sculptures, murals, and stone inscriptions.
Take a leisurely walk through the temple grounds and admire the traditional architecture surrounded by mature trees, ponds, and gardens. Highlights include the Hall of the Holy Mother, the famous Nanlao Spring, and the Fish Pond Flying Beam, which together showcase the distinctive architectural and cultural heritage of Shanxi.
After the visit, enjoy lunch and then drive to Pingyao Ancient City. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and enjoy some free time to relax or explore the surroundings.
Day 2: Qiao Family Compound – Pingyao Ancient City (L/D)
After breakfast, travel to the Qiao Family Compound, a magnificent residential complex built during the Qing Dynasty by Qiao Zhiyong, a successful Shanxi merchant.
The compound is an outstanding example of traditional northern Chinese residential architecture. It consists of six main courtyard areas divided into numerous smaller courtyards, with more than 300 rooms arranged around courtyards and passageways. The distinctive layout, decorative details, and imposing walls provide an insight into the wealth and lifestyle of Shanxi’s merchant families during the Qing Dynasty.
The Qiao Family Compound became widely known internationally after being featured as a filming location for Raise the Red Lantern, directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li. It has also appeared in other Chinese film and television productions.
After lunch, return to explore Pingyao Ancient City, a remarkably well-preserved historic walled city with a history of more than 2,700 years. Walk through its traditional streets and narrow lanes, where historic residences, shops, temples, courtyards, and city walls preserve the architectural character of a traditional Chinese county town.
Explore some of Pingyao’s most important landmarks, including Rishengchang Exchange Shop, widely regarded as one of China’s earliest draft banks, and Mingqing Street, the historic commercial heart of the old city.
Pingyao Ancient City was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 for its well-preserved urban fabric and outstanding examples of traditional Chinese architecture and city planning.
After sightseeing, return to your hotel in Pingyao for an overnight stay.
