Bayanbulak Grassland Tour Spot
Bayanbulak Grassland Scenic Area is located in the northwest of Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, in the heart of the southern foothills of the central Tianshan Mountains. Covering an area of approximately 1,259.47 square kilometers, it is one of the most spectacular alpine grassland and wetland destinations in China.
Located in the upper reaches of the Kaidu River, Bayanbulak is characterized by vast alpine meadows, high-altitude marsh wetlands, snow-capped mountains, winding rivers, and rich wildlife. The scenic area is about 288 kilometers from Hejing County, 360 kilometers from Korla City, and approximately 500 kilometers from Urumqi.
Known as “the most beautiful and fertile pasture at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains,” Bayanbulak Grassland offers visitors an unforgettable combination of natural beauty, ecological diversity, Mongolian culture, and outdoor adventure.

Top Attractions in Bayanbulak Grassland

Swan Lake Nature Reserve – China’s Largest Swan Habitat
The Bayanbulak Swan Lake Nature Reserve is the largest swan reserve in China and one of the most important habitats for migratory birds in Central Asia.
Every spring, thousands of swans and more than 120 species of waterfowl and migratory birds gather around the wetlands, creating one of the most spectacular wildlife scenes in Xinjiang.
The peaceful lake, surrounded by green meadows and snow-covered mountains, provides visitors with excellent opportunities for bird watching, photography, and experiencing the harmony between nature and wildlife.

Kaidu River’s Eighteen Bends – A Photographer’s Paradise
The Eighteen Bends of the Kaidu River is the most iconic landscape of Bayanbulak Grassland. The river winds gracefully across the vast grassland, creating numerous curves and reflections under the sunlight.
At sunset, the river surface reflects the golden sky, forming a breathtaking natural painting. The famous viewpoint allows visitors to capture the spectacular combination of the winding river, endless grasslands, and distant mountains.

Bayanbulak Town – Gateway to the Grassland
Bayanbulak Town is located within the scenic area and is known as one of China’s characteristic landscape tourism towns. It provides accommodation, local food, and cultural experiences for travelers exploring the grassland.
Visitors can experience traditional Mongolian culture, including local customs, folk performances, horseback riding, and authentic Mongolian cuisine.

Bird Watching Platforms
Several observation platforms have been built throughout the grassland, including:
* Swan Lake Bird Watching Platform
* Zaxitai Bird Watching Platform
* Eighteen Bends Observation Platform
These viewpoints provide excellent locations to admire the wetlands, observe wildlife, and photograph the changing scenery of the Tianshan Mountains.

The Beauty of Bayanbulak Through Four Seasons
Bayanbulak Grassland changes dramatically throughout the year, offering unique scenery in every season.

Spring (March–June) – The Return of Swans and Flowers
In March, thousands of swans and migratory birds return to Swan Lake, marking the arrival of spring. By late April to June, snow begins to melt, wildflowers bloom across the grassland, and herds of cattle and sheep appear among the green meadows.
The contrast between snow-covered peaks and fresh green valleys creates a spectacular vertical landscape.

Summer (June–September) – The Golden Season of the Grassland
From late June to July, the grassland reaches its most beautiful period. The green meadows stretch endlessly, flowers bloom everywhere, and the traditional scene of “wind blowing through grass revealing grazing cattle and sheep” appears across the plateau.
August and September offer pleasant weather, colorful flowers, and perfect conditions for photography and outdoor activities.

Autumn (October) – Golden Grassland Scenery
In October, the grassland turns golden. Herds of cattle and sheep scattered across the vast fields look like patterns embroidered on a golden carpet.
As temperatures drop in mid-October, swans begin their southward migration, creating another spectacular natural scene.

Winter (November–April) – A Snow-Covered Wonderland
During winter, Bayanbulak becomes a vast white world covered with snow. Snowy mountains, frozen wetlands, and silent grasslands create a peaceful and magical atmosphere.

Climate of Bayanbulak Grassland
Bayanbulak has a temperate continental mountain climate, characterized by short summers and long winters.
* Average annual temperature: approximately -4.7°C
* Annual sunshine hours: about 2,800–2,832 hours
* Annual precipitation: approximately 216.8–361.8 mm
Due to its high altitude and cool climate, visitors should prepare warm clothing even during summer, especially for early mornings and evenings.
