In 1951, Chongsan and Zuoxian counties were merged into Chongzuo County. In 2003, the city was officially established.

Chongzuo,this city is located in the southwestern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous and is the region's communications hub. It occupies an area of 17.345 square kilometers with a population of around 2.274.000 and among them 89.13 percent are of the Zhuang Nationality. Chongzuo is a prefecture-level city which has the highest rate of Zhuang people.It borders Nanning to the northeast; Baise to the north and Fangchenggang to the southeast. It is bounded to the west and south by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
